exploring the interplay of light, contrast, color and form
Artist Statement
At first glance, the images in my series Seeing Beyond seem to depict an ‘strange reality’. The circular patterns resemble wheels, spirals, eyes…. One wonders what they portray. Upon close inspection, though, one can see repeating features of nature such as a ridgeline or a tree.
I create these images out of an intense curiosity to both explore the interplay of light, contrast, color and forms in nature and a desire to find out what is possible with the camera – what works and why. At the same time, I stay true to photography and only do what was possible 30 years ago with film and darkroom.
It is my intention to portray the pervading beauty all around us in a manner that challenges the way we look at things. By defying the normal linear perception, I want to invite the viewer to let go of the analytical senses and surrender to the mysterious. Simultaneously, these pictures activate the imagination. It is my hope that this enriches the viewer.
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.
